On Friday we all went out to do a morning of service for a Day of Rememberance and Service for 9/11. I went with a group of people to clean up an alley in Sacramento. We did the whole thing pretty quick and removed a lot of debris from the space.
Then, me and 4 other team leaders got invited to go to the capital building for s ome speeches on service. There were a few classes of 4th graders, lots of press and many people who do service in California, including police officers, military personnel and Americorps people. So there was a moment of silence for 9/11 and also lots of speeches regarding service and why its important to people. Amy was the person from NCCC brave enough to address the crowd and she did a great job, by far the best speaker there. The governator was there so that was kind of cool to see him up close. I have attached a picture! It was actually a pretty inspiring part of they day.

Saturday morning was the pack test. The people who are interested in being on the fuel reduction team (4 teams that will work primarily removing potential fuel for fires aka brush) walked 3 miles with a 45 pound vest on. The rest of us cheered them on. That should be the final step for the Unit leaders to assign the units. There will be 28 teams, broken up into 4 groups, called units. So hopefully next week we will learn what unit we're on. Then I will know which of the unit leaders will be my direct supervisor.
A bunch of us watched a movie in the lounge and then went to downtown Sacramento for the evening. There is an event called Second Saturday where there is free food and art galleries are open. Lots of cities have them, i know Philadelphia has a first Friday. Anyways, so we wandered around a little bit, then got some dinner and hung out for a while. I was up the latest last night and it was still only midnight. i am so old!
And lastly, today, a bunch of us took a road trip to tahoe. I'll post a few pictures of that as well. We stopped at a trail that was pretty short and went right to the water. It was pretty spectacular and the pictures just can't capture how big it is. and quiet. Quiet still freaks me out a little bit. We stopped at a winery in El Dorado county on the way home too. Route 50 is pretty scenic with lots of windy roads, giant cliffs and views of the Lake. Not bad God, not bad.
