my laptop started working again, making this entry much more convenient!
today we had a service project with 3 other teams with the Weed Warriors
9http://www.sacvalleycnps.org/Projects/weedFiles/Swwhome/weedhome.html). Our site supervisor was a man named Frank who was in the peace corps in the second year it was in existence. thought that was pretty cool and brave.
i was little nervous about the project because the description said we'd be weeding for 6 hours and i couldn't figure out how that could be enough work for 40 people. however, that was before i learnd about the giant reed we would be working on.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_reed) They are non native plants that suck up a lot of water and clog drainage pipes. They are also highly flammable, making homes near it at higher risk for fires, especially in the dry climate of sacramento.
first we had to build a little bridge out of plywood over the cree. then my team used loppers to chop the reeds and then we had 2 teams of people passing them up the hill to another team that was chopping them into 8 foot sections and using a tarp to bring them to a pile where the town will pick them up tomorrow. i didn't take any pictures because i forgot my camera, but i 'll get some from my team. all in all between the 4 teams we moved 43 tarps of reeds and underbrush, totalling 3400 pounds! not bad for one day's work.
also yay for the weekend!
