10/18

i have almost made it through the first weekend of CTI (corps training institute).

So I am in charge of POD 3 and they have a lot of energy! they just met this week and already don't want to get put onto a new team when the time comes. We worked together on saturday at St. George's Community Garden in Carmichael (10 minutes away). Its a community garden that is located at an episcopal church. They currently have about 20 15X15 plots of land for people to use free of charge to use as a garden. many people use it to grow vegetables to feed themselves and their families. its pretty cool because the church doesn't charge them to use the land and it makes their grounds pretty.

We did a few projects for them. We turned over a few of the plots to get ready for the winter. the idea was to pull out the grass and weeds so that they are ready for next spring. then we also assisted in building a compost space out of cinder blocks. It will be used to turn gardening waste into new soil and fertilizer. Their last compost attempt didn't quite work, so we cleaned that up and hauled it away. definately saw a lot of fun bugs under that pile. We ended the day weeding out the paths between the plots. we learned how tough bermuda grass is...

So i think it was a pretty successful day! nice start to the year
